What is needed?
Budget Reduction & Fiscal Responsibility
The Assessor's office is top heavy. Three managers for a staff of seventeen would never cut it in the private sector. With her knowledge and experience in all areas of the office, Mary is equiped to bear some of the actual workload, cut management costs and reserve our limited county resources for vital services like Public Safety.
Leadership
Mary is a motivated individual. She is one to lead by example and will take a hands on approach to leading the Assessor's office during this critical period. Shadowing junior assessors in the field and striving to develop strong team-work mentality in the office will be one of Mary’s top priorities.
Training
As an experienced, accredited appraiser having served in many roles within the Assessors office, no other candidate is better equipped to train and develop staff and achieve the continuing improvements and adaptations that are needed. The current Assessor is not an accredited appraiser and therefore is unable to train, develop, or lead by example.
Performance Reviews
In order to ensure that all department staff are continually striving to give their very best to the position, Mary feels strongly that a system of performance review is needed. This is commonplace in the private sector and will bring about significant improvements in office morale and the quality of assessments.
Consistency
By instituting a simple system of cross-training, Mary can achieve improvements in consistency of assessments while simultaneously reducing the pressure felt by recent staff cutbacks. By having employees cross-trained, staff can cover other areas of the department during sickness, leave, vacation or during times of heavier than normal work-loads. This will not only increase consistency, but will save money!
Accuracy
The most important characteristic of an assessment is its accuracy. By implementing these changes, the accuracy of Island County property assessments will improve giving taxpayers confidence in their assessments.
Respect
Island County taxpayers deserve respect, appreciation, and friendly customer service when dealing with issues surrounding their property assessments. This will be a of paramount importance to Mary and the staff of the Island County Assessor’s Office under her leadership.
